The Woodlands, TX Pest Control Services

All of the features that attract families to The Woodlands, like beautiful trees and year-round warm temperatures, attract pests as well. Not only are pests a nuisance, but many spread diseases and otherwise impact health and well-being.

Read below to learn about some of the critters that are drawn to homes in the Houston area.

Ants

There are thousands of species of ants, but the most common in this region are carpenter ants, red fire ants, pharaoh ants and pavement ants. They’re drawn to moisture, damp wood, and ordinary foods.

Carpenter ants can do significant structural damage. They don’t ingest wood, but they chew it and knock it out of the way to make room for their nests.

Fire ants build sizable mounds in yards, gardens, and even air-conditioning units. They’re aggressive toward humans and pets if threatened, and their bites are quite painful.

Pharaoh ants should be taken very seriously. They’re capable of transmitting staphylococcus and other potentially fatal diseases.

Roaches

It could take weeks to discover a roach infestation if you don’t know where to look. Roaches multiply very quickly, and they’re excellent hiders. They aren’t picky eaters; dead insects, glue, soap and even books are appetizing.

Roach infestation has been linked to asthma in children.

Bed Bugs

At least bed bugs don’t spread disease. That’s the only nice thing to say about them. They subsist on human blood, so they typically hide in bedding and mattresses in order to be close to the food supply. Bites may go unnoticed for a couple of weeks. For especially sensitive victims, though, they may result in swelling and a tormenting itch.

Bed bugs are terrible housekeepers. In their travels, they leave behind empty egg casings and a rust-colored trail of fecal matter. A bed bug infestation is a real mess.

Termites

Termites devour anything that contains cellulose, an abundant organic substance found in plants and their byproducts. Outdoor wood sources, mulch, pine needles, wood floors, furniture, and cardboard are appealing.

Since their damage isn't immediately evident, termites get by with a lot of destruction before they’re noticed.

Mosquitoes

These pesky creatures will breed in just about any large or small body of standing water.

It’s not for food that mosquitoes bite and suck blood. Females need it in order to lay their eggs. Mosquito bites and their associated pain and itching are the least of our worries: Mosquitoes transmit serious diseases like malaria and West Nile virus.
